Actor Nakamura Shikan IV was a leading kabuki performer of the mid-nineteenth century, celebrated for his handsome features and his mastery of both male and female roles (onnagata). This 1862 portrait, produced during Yoshitoshi's early career as an apprentice printmaker, shows his developing skill at capturing actor likenesses with the combination of stylization and psychological presence demanded by the [yakusha-e](/glossary/yakusha-e) tradition. The print's format and style reflect the conventions of Edo commercial printing at its commercial peak.
