This circa 1890 ōban [triptych](/glossary/triptych) shows the actor Ichikawa Danjūrō IX in the role of Kezori Kuemon, the notorious pirate-villain of kabuki drama. Danjūrō IX was the most celebrated actor of the Meiji era, the ninth in a dynasty of performers famous for the "rough style" (aragoto) of kabuki performance. Yoshitoshi's theatrical prints of this period capture the actor at the height of his powers, translating the kinetic energy of live kabuki performance into the static woodblock format with remarkable vitality.
