"Kurokumo Ōji" translates as "Black Cloud Prince," a supernatural or legendary figure rendered in Yoshitoshi's explosive muza-e style of 1867. The period saw Yoshitoshi producing print after print of demons, monsters, and fearsome warriors for a mass market that craved sensational imagery. The black cloud in the title suggests a being associated with darkness and elemental power, consistent with the supernatural themes Yoshitoshi would continue to refine throughout his career.
