Moonlight over Mount Yoshino from 1886 evokes one of Japan's most celebrated poetic landscapes—the mountain famous for its spectacular cherry blossoms and for the tragic last stand of the Southern Court during the Nanbokuchō civil wars of the fourteenth century. Yoshitoshi renders the mountain under pale moonlight, invoking centuries of waka poetry and historical memory associated with Yoshino's blossoms and ghosts. The nocturnal palette of deep indigo and silver creates an atmosphere of quiet melancholy.
