"Picture of Raikō and his Four Companions Conquering the Demon of Mount Ōe" (1864) depicts Minamoto no Yorimitsu (Raikō) and his retainers subduing the demon king Shuten-dōji at his fortress on Mount Ōe—one of the most celebrated supernatural battles in all of Japanese legend. The warriors, disguised as wandering priests, were given enchanted sake by the god Sumiyoshi to drug the demon before the final assault. Yoshitoshi renders the climactic battle with the maximalist violence he brought to all his early demon-slaying compositions.
