This 1883 ōban print depicts Sagami Jirō, a retainer of the rebel warlord Taira no Masakado, facing the Fujiwara general, drawn from the series "Yoshitoshi's Incomparable Warriors" (Yoshitoshi mushaburui). The warriors series, produced between 1883 and 1886, represents one of Yoshitoshi's most sustained achievements in [musha-e](/glossary/musha-e)—each print a psychological study of a single warrior in a defining moment of action or contemplation. The bold compositions and rich color printing mark this series as among his finest work.
