Takashi Bay (1863) is a seascape set at Takashi no Hama in Settsu Province, a site steeped in classical Japanese poetry. The bay was celebrated in waka verse for its white waves and its association with the Genji-Heike naval conflicts, making it a resonant subject for a printmaker steeped in historical narrative. Yoshitoshi renders the churning waters with fluid confidence, the waves drawn in the vigorous style he inherited from Kuniyoshi's tradition of dramatic nature scenes.
