"The Ghost of Genji's Lover" depicts one of the supernatural presences that haunt the narrative of "The Tale of Genji"—the vengeful spirit of Lady Rokujō, whose jealousy manifested as a living ghost that possessed and killed Genji's other consorts. Yoshitoshi renders the apparition with the translucent menace characteristic of his ghost imagery: the figure simultaneously beautiful and terrible, love and hatred fused in a supernatural form that transcends the boundary between the living and the dead. The Genji spirits were among the most artistically rich supernatural subjects in all of Japanese literature.
