Key value factors: For living or recently deceased artists, limited edition size and gallery representation drive value. Signed and numbered prints from smaller editions are most desirable.
Ichikawa Danjuro XII appears here as Umeomaru, the loyal retainer from the kabuki classic Sugawara Denju Tenarai Kagami, in a print completed March 1988. Umeomaru is one of three triplet brothers who serve the exiled scholar-official Sugawara no Michizane, and his role demands explosive physical presence — he is the embodiment of righteous fury, his face painted in the bold red kumadori lines that signify heroic passion. Kokei's ink and color woodblock captures the specific intensity of Danjuro XII in this role: the swollen musculature of the face, the fierce set of the jaw, and the extravagant costume that amplifies the body into a monument of defiance.
