Description
This 1988 woodblock print shows Ichikawa Danjuro XII performing the Kurumabiki (Carriage Pulling) scene from Sugawara Denju Tenarai Kagami, one of kabuki's most visually explosive set pieces. In Kurumabiki, the triplet brothers Umeomaru, Sakuramaru, and Matsuomaru confront each other beside an ox-drawn carriage, each wearing the bold kumadori face paint that identifies his allegiance. Umeomaru's crimson lines mark him as the heroic figure, and the scene builds to a climactic mie (dramatic pose) that freezes the action at its peak of physical tension. Kokei captures this specific dramatic moment, the actor's body coiled in the stylized power stance.
