Description
Ichikawa Danshiro IV appears again as Tonbei in this 1988 woodblock print, a companion piece to the January portrait of the same actor in the same role. Where the earlier print may have focused on the ferryman's outward appearance, this version captures a different moment or angle from the performance, reflecting Kokei's practice of creating multiple studies of a single role as performed by one actor. The ferryman Tonbei — outwardly humble, inwardly complex — offered rich material for such repeated investigation, his weathered exterior concealing layers of narrative that shift depending on the moment observed.
