Description
This September 1997 print depicts Ichikawa Ennosuke in the role of Onna Sendo Oen, a female boatman — an unusual character type in kabuki that blends the physical labor of river work with feminine grace. Ennosuke (later Ennosuke III) was celebrated for his acrobatic "super kabuki" innovations, bringing athletic energy and theatrical spectacle to traditional roles. As Oen, the onna sendo (female ferryman), the actor must balance the character's working-class toughness with an underlying femininity, a duality that Kokei's woodblock rendering captures in the contrast between the figure's muscular pose and the delicate patterning of the costume.
