Description
This August 1995 woodblock print shows Nakamura Jakuemon portraying Oryu, the wife of Ginpei. Oryu is a nyobo-yaku (wife role) from the domestic drama tradition, a character defined by conjugal loyalty and the suffering that loyalty demands. Jakuemon was one of the postwar period's great onnagata specialists, known for bringing psychological realism to female roles that earlier generations had played with more stylized formality. Kokei's portrait captures the actor's interpretation of a woman bound to her husband's fate — the set of the mouth, the steady gaze, and the modest but carefully arranged costume all communicating the quiet resolve that defines Oryu's dramatic function.
