This August 1995 woodblock print shows Nakamura Jakuemon portraying Oryu, the wife of Ginpei. Oryu is a nyobo-yaku (wife role) from the domestic drama tradition, a character defined by conjugal loyalty and the suffering that loyalty demands. Jakuemon was one of the postwar period's great onnagata specialists, known for bringing psychological realism to female roles that earlier generations had played with more stylized formality.
