Description
Nakamura Senjaku II appears as Osome in this 1987 print depicting a scene from Toribe-yama Shinju (Love Suicide at Toribe Mountain), one of the shinju-mono (love-suicide plays) adapted from Chikamatsu Monzaemon's puppet theater originals. Toribe-yama, located in eastern Kyoto near the cremation grounds, lends the play its title and its atmosphere of finality — the lovers' journey to the mountain mirrors their journey toward death. Senjaku II's Osome must convey both the tenderness of genuine love and the desperation that drives the couple to their fatal decision. Kokei's woodblock captures the character at a moment of emotional extremity.
