Key value factors: For living or recently deceased artists, limited edition size and gallery representation drive value. Signed and numbered prints from smaller editions are most desirable.
Nakamura Tomijuro takes the role of Soga Goro in this May 1993 woodblock print. Soga Goro Tokimune is the younger of the legendary Soga Brothers, whose vendetta against their father's killer Kudo Suketsune is one of Japan's foundational revenge narratives. In kabuki, Goro is characterized by his hot-headed impetuosity and youthful martial vigor, contrasting with his cautious elder brother Juro. His face is painted in the aragoto style — exaggerated features expressing barely contained rage. Kokei records Tomijuro's specific embodiment of this iconic role, the actor's physical choices giving flesh to a character who has existed in the Japanese imagination for eight centuries.
