Key value factors: For living or recently deceased artists, limited edition size and gallery representation drive value. Signed and numbered prints from smaller editions are most desirable.
This October 1990 bust portrait from Kokei's eighth series of Okubi-e (large-head pictures) presents Onoe Baiko VII as Masaoka, the tragic nurse of Meiboku Sendai Hagi. As the fourth design in Series VIII, this print belongs to Kokei's sustained project of documenting contemporary kabuki through the historical bust-portrait format pioneered by Sharaku and Toyokuni in the 1790s. The Okubi-e format amplifies every nuance of the face: the tension around the eyes, the controlled set of the mouth, the wig's arrangement signaling Masaoka's maternal station. Baiko VII's interpretation of this famously demanding role is preserved here with the directness that only the close-cropped bust portrait can achieve.
