Key value factors: For living or recently deceased artists, limited edition size and gallery representation drive value. Signed and numbered prints from smaller editions are most desirable.
From Kokei's fourth Okubi-e (bust portrait) series, completed in October 1984, this print shows Onoe Baiko VII as Mokuzume, a female character whose name connects to the rural world — "moku" suggesting wood or trees. Mokuzume appears as a country girl (inaka musume) in certain plays, her simplicity contrasting with the sophistication of urban characters. As the sixth design in Series IV, this bust portrait captures Baiko VII's portrayal of rustic innocence: the hairstyle plainer than a courtesan's elaborate construction, the expression open and unguarded, the costume suggesting provincial rather than metropolitan taste. Kokei's tight framing transforms these subtle character details into the print's primary subject.
