Key value factors: For living or recently deceased artists, limited edition size and gallery representation drive value. Signed and numbered prints from smaller editions are most desirable.
Onoe Kikugoro performs as Yosaburo from the Genjimise in this July 1989 woodblock print. The Genjimise scene comes from the play Kirare Yosa (Scarface Yosa), in which the once-handsome young man Yosaburo — disfigured by sword cuts after a love affair gone wrong — confronts the woman who caused his ruin. Yosaburo's entrance speech, cataloging his scars, is one of kabuki's most famous monologues, delivered with a mixture of bitterness, dark humor, and residual charm. Kikugoro brings his own theatrical lineage to this role, and Kokei records the specific moment when the scarred face, the tattered kimono, and the defiant posture converge into unforgettable theater.
