Description

Onoe Shoroku portrays Kudo Suketsune in this 1989 woodblock print, a companion to the January portrait of the same actor in the same villainous role. Suketsune is the target of the Soga Brothers' famous vendetta, a powerful lord whose murder of their father set the revenge plot in motion. In kabuki performance, the villain must be imposing enough to justify decades of pursuit — a figure of genuine menace and authority, not a mere caricature of evil. Kokei returns to this subject to capture a different facet of Shoroku's performance, the same character revealed from another angle or frozen at another dramatic moment.
