Description
Boy's Day 2—the celebration of Tango no Sekku on the fifth day of the fifth month, when households with sons fly carp streamers from poles above their rooftops and display warrior dolls indoors—appears in Azechi's folk-art-influenced style as a subject naturally suited to his visual vocabulary. The carp streamers themselves, their painted scales and open mouths, their movement in the wind, were among the most graphic elements of traditional Japanese seasonal celebration, and his simplified rendering would have given them bold, energetic form.
