Climber in the Woods shows Azechi's mountaineer in the forested terrain below treeline—the approach through timber, before the world opens up into alpine exposure. The woods through which climbers pass en route to the heights have a different quality than the summit environment: enclosed, damp, the trail a narrow thread through dense growth, the mountain visible in glimpses through the canopy. His bold treatment of the forest setting would have created a different compositional density than the open-air summit compositions.
