Description

Early Spring Mountain from 1963 depicts the mountain in the season of transition—snow still present on the upper reaches, but the bare rock of lower ridges beginning to show, the first warmth penetrating the valley below. Early spring in the Japanese Alps carries a specific quality: the light is strong and clear, but the snow remains consolidated and potentially dangerous. Azechi's palette for this season would have combined the residual blue-white of late snow with the warm ochres of newly exposed ground.
