Mman and a white bird

A stylized, close-up portrait of a bearded man rendered in flat blocks of pink, black, and blue-grey, his face split by a vertical band of black striations running from hairline to chin. Large white almond-shaped eyes with black pupils dominate the mask-like face, above a small brown nose and mouth; one oversized pink hand emerges from the dark, textured robe below, palm up beside a plump white bird perched at the man's shoulder. The print is signed in pencil at lower right and carries a small red seal at lower left; this woodblock print, "Man and a White Bird" by Umetaro Azechi (year unknown), uses a muted, blue-grey ground throughout.
