Description

Six stylized, mask-like human faces with elongated grey heads, dark almond eyes, and red mouths are clustered beneath an erupting volcano rendered in blocky planes of green, brown, and red with white smoke rising from its red crater. The composition is bordered by two solid black vertical bands against a flat turquoise-blue background, giving the print a bold, graphic quality typical of the woodcut medium. Umetaro Azechi's 1980 color woodcut "People of Fire Mountain" is pencil-signed and numbered in the lower margin.
