Unknown Man and Cloud—figure and atmospheric phenomenon in relationship at altitude—depicts the specific experience of being among the clouds at high elevation, when the climber is no longer beneath weather but within it. The cloud at altitude had a different presence than the cloud seen from below: it moved through the climber rather than passing overhead, the world momentarily dissolved into white diffusion before emerging again with new visibility. Azechi's simplified rendering of figure and cloud would have expressed this dissolution and recovery.
