Description
Unknown Red Mountain—a mountain composition defined primarily by the unexpected warm color of its primary subject—shows Azechi departing from the blue-white-grey palette of his snow and ice subjects for the warm ochres and vermilions of volcanic terrain, sunset illumination, or pure chromatic invention. The red mountain might be a volcanic peak whose mineral deposits colored its rock, or a mountain at sunset when the horizontal light turned the snow's reflective surface to warm rose and orange.
