The Nishi Dai gate of Hōryū-ji — one of the ancient temple complex's ceremonial entrances — is rendered in Hiratsuka's direct woodblock style. Dating to around 1948, the print belongs to his sustained postwar documentation of Japan's oldest Buddhist architecture. The gate's 7th-century timber construction, its weathered joinery and simple proportions, suited his preference for structure over ornament.
