$500–$8,000. Common later works: $500–$1,500. Key value factors: His enormous output (lived to 102) means most works are accessible. Early black-and-white prints are most valued.
The old roof tiles of Kokubunji Temple at Izumo — ancient fired clay fragments from one of the provincial temples established across Japan by Emperor Shōmu in the 8th century — are here transcribed directly into woodblock. Hiratsuka's 1985 print, made when he was ninety years old, returns to the tile motif that had preoccupied him for decades. The Izumo location connects the work to his birthplace in Shimane Prefecture.
