A torii gate — the threshold marker of Shinto sacred precincts, its twin uprights and two horizontal crossbars one of the most recognizable forms in Japanese architecture — is rendered in Hiratsuka's direct woodblock style. The undated print captures the gate in isolation, without the shrine complex it would normally announce, giving the threshold form a free-standing architectural presence it seldom has in reality.
