Act 11, Part 1: The Approach to the Night Attack (Juichidanme ichi, yochi oshiyose) is a landscape print by Utagawa Hiroshige from his series The Revenge of the Loyal Retainers (Chushingura), made around 1829 and held in the Art Institute of Chicago. The Chushingura, the dramatized story of the forty-seven ronin and their winter vendetta against the official Kira Yoshinaka, was one of the most beloved narratives of the Edo period, and Hiroshige's series translates the kabuki and bunraku versions of the tale into woodblock form. In this scene the loyal retainers gather under cover of falling snow to begin their night attack, with banners and weapons silhouetted against the white ground and the dark walls of Kira's mansion looming at the right. Although it is fundamentally a narrative print, the design extends Hiroshige's mature landscape print sensibility to a historical drama: [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) gradients in the snowy sky and the cold blue tones of the courtyard frame the action and give the moment its specific time of night and time of year. The work belongs to a long Edo [ukiyo-e](/glossary/ukiyo-e) tradition of Chushingura imagery that crosses genres, but Hiroshige's contribution is distinctive in the way it folds storytelling figures into atmospheric environments rather than treating them as stage portraits. The Art Institute of Chicago impression preserves the strong contrasts of snow and shadow that characterize a good early state. Within Hiroshige's career, this Chushingura sheet illustrates how his landscape print methods could be applied to subject matter beyond the [meisho-e](/glossary/meisho-e) tradition, anchoring even the most celebrated late Edo period narrative in a vividly observed setting.
