Cooling off at Ryogoku Bridge (Ryogokubashi noryo) belongs to Utagawa Hiroshige's series Famous Places in Edo (Koto meisho), produced around 1834 and held by the Art Institute of Chicago. Ryogoku Bridge spanned the Sumida River and was one of the most heavily used crossings in the city; in summer its broad approaches and the river itself became a public stage for evening cooling (noryo), a custom in which Edo residents flocked to the waterfront to escape the heat, eat, drink, and watch fireworks.
