Description
Duck and Bamboo is a bird-and-flower study by Utagawa Hiroshige, the Edo ukiyo-e master whose name is most often associated with the landscape print but who also produced a substantial body of kachō-e, the genre of small-format compositions in which a single bird is paired with a seasonal plant. In this design a duck is set against slender bamboo, the two motifs balanced so that the diagonal of the stalks counters the rounded mass of the bird's body and the muted tonalities of feather, leaf, and ground hold together in a quiet, contemplative whole. Hiroshige's training under Utagawa Toyohiro gave him fluency in the brushwork traditions of bird-and-flower painting, and his prints in this mode translate that calligraphic line into the woodblock medium with great economy, using a few firm contours to convey the duck's posture and softer impressions to suggest plumage and foliage. The pairing of waterfowl with bamboo carries long-standing associations in East Asian poetry and painting with winter resilience and quiet observation, and Hiroshige clearly intended his audience to read the image in that allusive register. Unlike the great landscape print series for which he is best known, kachō-e such as this circulated as inexpensive decorative sheets, often inscribed with classical or kyōka verse, and they show another facet of his sensibility: an attentiveness to small natural subjects that complements the panoramic vision of his road and city series. The impression preserved in the Harvard Art Museums anchors the design within an institutional collection where Hiroshige's range across genres can be studied in depth.
