Description
Tateyama, the sacred volcanic mountain in Etchu Province (modern Toyama), was one of the three great mountains of Japan — alongside Fuji and Hakusan — and an important pilgrimage destination. This print from the "One Hundred Famous Views of the Provinces" depicts the mountain's dramatic peak emerging from cloud, the austere alpine landscape conveying the spiritual weight the mountain carried in Buddhist and Shinto tradition.
