Description
Shimotani in Hoki Province (modern Tottori) is depicted in this print from the "One Hundred Famous Views of the Provinces," showing the dramatic valley landscape of the San-in coast region. Hoki Province was known for its rugged mountains and isolated valleys, and Shimotani — "lower valley" — captures the enclosed, steep character of interior settlements in this remote part of western Japan.
