Hiroshige's moonlit and night scenes are celebrated for their emotional depth and mastery of atmospheric printing. Bokashi gradation in night blues and silvery grays is the hallmark of fine impressions.
Takanawa, the coastal strip south of Edo along the shores of Edo Bay, offered some of the capital's most famous evening and nighttime views. This nocturnal scene shows the area under darkness, with lantern light and moonlight playing across the water. Takanawa was lined with daimyo estates and teahouses, and its shoreline walk was a fashionable promenade for Edo residents.
