Description

Small-Horned Owl, Pine, and Crescent Moon is an Edo ukiyo-e kacho-e print by Utagawa Hiroshige from around 1830 and held in the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago. Although Hiroshige is most widely celebrated for his landscape print designs, his nocturnal bird-and-flower compositions reveal a similar fascination with atmosphere, mood, and the elegant balance of motif and empty space. The image situates a small-horned owl on the branch of an old pine, with a slender crescent moon hung in the sky beyond. The vertical tanzaku format, common in Hiroshige's kacho-e output, allows the pine to bend across the sheet while the moon and bird mark precise points of compositional emphasis. The dark, restricted palette, often built from deep blues and grays, evokes a particular hour of night and the hushed quality of moonlight filtering through evergreens. Owls in Japanese visual tradition carried mixed associations, sometimes ominous and sometimes protective, while the pine and crescent moon together build a layered seasonal and symbolic context. The Art Institute of Chicago documents the work as part of its Hiroshige holdings, where it joins other nocturnal and seasonal designs. As a Utagawa Hiroshige print, this design shows how the artist's command of nocturne extended from grand landscape compositions, such as his views of Ryogoku Bridge, to small intimate moments anchored by a single creature and a single source of light. For collectors and scholars of Edo ukiyo-e, Small-Horned Owl, Pine, and Crescent Moon offers an evocative example of how Hiroshige used kacho-e to explore mood with the same seriousness he brought to his more famous landscape series.
