Snapper (Isaki), Scorpionfish (Kasago) and Ginger (Shin shoga) from A Shoal of Fishes (Uo-zukushi), a posthumously issued 1867 sheet, belongs to Utagawa Hiroshige's most ambitious still-life series. The Uo-zukushi gathered marine subjects with the seasonal vegetables, herbs, and aromatics that conventionally accompanied them on the Edo table, and each sheet pairs the natural-history specimen with a kyoka verse to weave gastronomy, observation, and wit together. Here the rounded body of a snapper, with its characteristic markings rendered in delicate gradations, lies beside a scorpionfish whose spiny dorsal fin is drawn with careful attention to the threat of the live animal, while sprigs of fresh ginger fan out beneath them. The combination evokes a particular kind of summer meal at an Edo fishmonger's. Although the series stands apart from the celebrated Edo [ukiyo-e](/glossary/ukiyo-e) landscape print genre for which Hiroshige is best known, it draws on the same pictorial discipline: clean negative space, restrained palette, and confident keyblock outline. The Harvard Art Museums impression preserves the layered color blocks that distinguish early states. Within Hiroshige's oeuvre, the Shoal of Fishes prints have long been valued by both fine-art collectors and historians of Edo material culture for their precise documentation of urban diet.
