Description

Summer: Moon at Ryogoku Bridge, from Utagawa Hiroshige's series Famous Views of Edo in the Four Seasons (Shiki Koto meisho), is among his most atmospheric celebrations of one of Edo's beloved nocturnes. Ryogoku Bridge over the Sumida was the city's great summer pleasure ground: from late spring to the end of summer, the river opened to boats, music, and fireworks, and the riverbanks filled with crowds escaping the heat. Hiroshige's landscape print isolates the bridge against the moonlit sky, with pleasure boats lit by paper lanterns drifting on the dark water, while distant warehouses and willow trees on the banks dissolve into a deep evening blue. The Edo ukiyo-e palette is at its most distinctive here: imported indigo, applied with bokashi gradations, defines the sky and the river in interlocking bands, while pinpricks of unprinted paper register lanterns and the moon as quiet white accents. The Harvard Art Museums impression preserves Hiroshige's deft management of nocturnal light, the dark architecture of the bridge silhouetted against just enough sky to read its span, and the gentle suggestion of human activity below. Within his larger four-seasons cycles, this sheet stands as the summer equivalent of his snow and cherry-blossom landscapes, and it confirms his standing as the premier visual chronicler of Edo's seasonal life.
