The Night Attack, Part 3: Mission Accomplished (Youchi san, honmo), from the series "The Revenge of the Loyal Retainers (Chushingura)"
- Date:

Hiroshige's moonlit and night scenes are celebrated for their emotional depth and mastery of atmospheric printing. Bokashi gradation in night blues and silvery grays is the hallmark of fine impressions.
The final scene in Hiroshige's Chushingura series shows the mission accomplished — the forty-seven loyal retainers having successfully avenged their lord's death in the dead of winter. The print captures the aftermath of the raid, the ronin gathered in the compound of the Sengakuji temple precinct where they surrendered themselves to the authorities, their duty complete. The restrained composition befits the somber dignity of the moment.
