Twilight Snow at Uchikawa (Uchikawa bosetsu), from Utagawa Hiroshige's series Eight Views of Kanazawa (Kanazawa hakkei), pairs the locality with the canonical eight-view condition of evening snow. The Edo ukiyo-e landscape print here is built on the artist's confidence in white: snow covers the foreground, the rooftops, the slopes of the surrounding hills, and the boats drawn up on the shore of the small inlet at Uchikawa, near the Kanazawa Bunko district south of Edo. A single low building or two, perhaps fishermen's shelters or a teahouse, sits at the water's edge with shutters drawn against the cold. The upper portion of the print fades through bokashi from a pale grey twilight to a deeper sky, and the bare branches of trees, drawn in fine keyblock line against the snow, supply the only fine detail in an otherwise broad and quiet composition. The Harvard Art Museums impression demonstrates Hiroshige's careful management of large fields of empty paper as snow, a technique he refined through his Kanazawa, Omi, and Edo series and brought to its highest pitch in the snow scenes of the One Hundred Famous Views of Edo. As a single sheet, the print stands at the intersection of classical poetic convention and local topography.
