Description
Nagasaki Kangayu-Saemon is a historical figure positioned within Kuniyoshi's broader warrior-portrait production, the specific combination of given name, clan name, and place suggesting a minor historical actor whose moment of fame was captured in chronicle and later in print. Kuniyoshi produced numerous such portraits of secondary historical figures alongside his major Suikoden and Chushingura series. The figure would appear in samurai equipment with identifying crests, his particular story encoded in visual attributes.
