The warrior Nitta Tadatsune ascends Mount Fuji on a hunting expedition and encounters the mountain goddess Konohanasakuya-hime and a dragon in her cave — a meeting of human boldness and divine power on the sacred mountain's slopes. Kuniyoshi depicts the subterranean encounter with the eerie luminosity of cave settings, the goddess and her dragon emerging from darkness while the warrior confronts them with samurai composure. The subject draws from legend associated with the Nitta clan and their connection to Fuji veneration.
