Description
This Utagawa Toyokuni print in the Metropolitan Museum of Art depicts the actor Onoe Matsusuke in the role of Lady Iwafuji, a celebrated villainess from the kabuki play "Kagamiyama Kokyo no [Nishiki-e](/glossary/nishiki-e)," a drama set in the inner quarters of a samurai household. Iwafuji is one of the great onnagata villain roles, requiring the male performer to convey aristocratic refinement layered with malicious calculation, and Onoe Matsusuke was renowned for his command of female roles spanning ghosts, courtesans, and high-ranking samurai women. Toyokuni's [yakusha-e](/glossary/yakusha-e) composition belongs to the Edo [ukiyo-e](/glossary/ukiyo-e) tradition that the Utagawa school dominated, and it carries the workshop's characteristic emphasis on individual likeness, costume detail, and stage-derived pose. The textiles of Iwafuji's robe communicate her position within the household hierarchy at the same time that they offer Toyokuni an opportunity to display the workshop's textile pattern repertoire. The composition isolates the figure against a quiet ground, focusing attention on the actor's face and on the carefully constructed costume that signaled status, season, and dramatic temperament. The Onoe acting family, like the Iwai and Ichikawa lines, occupied a distinguished position in Edo kabuki, and yakusha-e from the Utagawa workshop helped consolidate the fame of their leading members. For researchers studying Utagawa Toyokuni's onnagata portraits and the Utagawa school's broader contribution to Edo ukiyo-e, the print is a clear and well-preserved example of the genre at its commercial maturity.
