$1,000–$10,000. Snow and night scenes tend to command premium prices for this artist. Key value factors: Yamakawa's limited output and early death at 46 make his prints relatively scarce. Quality bijin-ga command steady prices.
Evening at Boshu Futoumi in Awa Province records the coastal scenery of what is now the Futtsu area on the western shore of the Boso Peninsula in Chiba Prefecture. Futoumi, meaning "rich sea," was known for its dramatic shoreline where rocky outcroppings met the waters of Tokyo Bay, offering expansive views across to the Miura Peninsula and, on clear days, Mount Fuji.
Shuho captures the scene at evening, when the lowering sun transforms the bay's surface into bands of reflected color. This landscape subject is unusual within his predominantly figure-focused output, showing his versatility as an artist. The oban woodblock print uses the horizontal expanse of sky and water to create a composition dominated by atmosphere rather than form, with the coastal rocks providing solid anchoring points within the luminous wash of dusk-lit sea and sky.
