Description
Baby and Mt Fuji belongs to Yamamoto Shoun's album Scenes of the Four Seasons, a parallel project to his more famous albums Women in Their Pursuits and Ima Sugata (Modern Figures), in which the artist turned his patient eye to the seasonal rhythms of family life in late Meiji Japan. The combination of a baby in the immediate foreground and the unmistakable silhouette of Mount Fuji in the distance signals the print's ambition to fold the most ordinary, intimate of subjects, a child, into the most iconic of Japanese landscapes, a juxtaposition that had a long pedigree in [ukiyo-e](/glossary/ukiyo-e) and that Shoun renews here with his characteristic restraint. Born in Kochi in 1870 and trained in Kano and Maruyama-Shijo painting before turning to woodblock design in the early 1890s, Shoun brought brushed calligraphic outlines, modulated color, and a generous use of unprinted paper to a genre that often favored bolder graphic shorthand. The print is preserved in the Japanese Art Open Database indexed by ukiyo-e.org, where the Scenes of the Four Seasons album has been digitized to support comparative reading alongside his better-known [bijin-ga](/glossary/bijin-ga) sets. Even when his ostensible subject was not an adult woman, Shoun's debt to the Meiji bijin-ga tradition is unmistakable in the careful attention paid to costume, posture, and emotional register. Baby and Mt Fuji is therefore best read as a companion to that wider project, demonstrating Shoun's willingness to extend the patient, sympathetic eye of Women in Their Pursuits and Ima Sugata into the domain of childhood, family, and seasonal celebration. The result is a print that combines national iconography with intimate family observation, a synthesis that exemplifies the artist's broader contribution to late Meiji print culture.
