A nocturne — a night scene in the tradition of Whistler's celebrated tonal paintings — rendered in Urushibara's woodblock technique. The nocturne format, which Whistler himself translated across media, suited woodblock printing's capacity for rich, dark tones and subtle gradations within a compressed value range. Whether depicting a European harbor, a Japanese canal, or an open landscape under moonlight, Urushibara's nocturne would have emphasized atmosphere over detail, mood over description.
