Stonehenge under moonlight — one of the most evocative subjects in Urushibara's European repertoire, combining the ancient megalithic monument with the romantic atmosphere of nocturnal illumination. The great standing stones, already venerable when Roman soldiers first encountered them, take on an entirely different character by moonlight, their massive silhouettes dark against the illuminated sky, their shadows long across the Wiltshire plain. Urushibara's woodblock technique, with its capacity for rich darks and subtle tonal gradations, suits this atmospheric subject especially well.
