Yoshijiro Urushibara, also known as Mokuchu, produced this woodblock print as part of a body of work that earned him unusual recognition in both Japan and Britain. Born in Tokyo in 1888, Urushibara trained in traditional woodblock techniques before traveling to London, where he spent most of his working life. His dual identity—Japanese craftsman and London-based artist—allowed him to move between cultural worlds with ease, applying ancestral printing methods to fresh subjects while maintaining the exacting standards of the Edo-period woodblock tradition. His prints are held in major collections worldwide, from the British Museum to Japanese national institutions.
