Samurai with War Fan presents the warrior wielding a gunbai — the large war fan used by generals on the battlefield to direct troops and signal formations. The war fan was simultaneously a practical instrument of military command and an object of considerable decorative beauty, its lacquered surface and radiating ribs translated naturally into the bold graphic language of the print medium. Mori's samurai with this distinctive implement emphasized the command authority of the warrior class, the fan's gesture of direction linking the figure to the tradition of great battlefield commanders.
