Description
A large seated Buddha figure fills the composition in this circa-1976 print by Karhu, the statue's scale and serenity creating a meditation on presence and permanence in the midst of Japan's sacred landscape. Karhu's occasional religious subjects reveal his engagement with Buddhist culture that was inseparable from life in Kyoto, a city where temples and their contents were part of the everyday environment rather than exceptional tourist destinations. The print's palette is muted and dignified, appropriate to its devotional subject.
